For the third year in a row, the Human Rights Campaign gave the City of Greensboro the highest score in its Municipal Equality Index (MEI) among all cities in North Carolina and South Carolina.
The MEI examines the laws, policies and services of municipalities and rates them on the basis of their inclusivity of LGBTQ people who live and work in the city.
Greensboro got perfect scores in three out of five categories: Municipal Services, Law Enforcement and Relationship with the LGBTQ Community. Greensboro scored points for the city leadership’s commitment to fully include the LGBTQ community and to advocate for full equality.
The City has long included sexual orientation in its equal employment opportunity policy and provided partner benefits before gay marriage was legal. The City health insurance plan also recently was updated to cover transition services for transgender employees.
